Handicap Calculations
A handicap any golfer receives for a given golf course depends on the course and how it is rated (the course rating), the degree of difficulty adjusted for those players that are not scratch golfers (the slope rating of the course) and of course a measure of how well this golfer has scored in the past. The factors are taken into account by calculation of the Handicap Differential in the following formula:
Differential= (adjusted gross score- Course rating) x 113/Slope.
To calculate how the golfer has scored in the past, one takes 20 previous scores and applies the formula above to determine the 10 best handicap differentials. A mean is taken of those 10 differentials and multiplied by 0.96. The least significant digit (in the hundredths) is simply dropped and not rounded and that is the USGA handicap Index.
